NxLeveL Graduate Success Story

"I Was My Own Brick Wall"

Words of wisdom from a successful NxLeveL graduate by Sue McLaughlin, Sue McLaughlin Bookkeeping

"I had not planned to start a business; it sort of happened by accident.  Even then, it was to be something I did in my spare time.... Maybe ten hours a week - maybe only ten hours a month.  I shared my new idea with a woman who is my financial advisor, and she gave me the advice that started the beginning of a new life for me.  I had never heard of the Community Business Partnership.  I had never heard of the Women's Business Center, but she told me I had to go check it out.  That was a fateful turning point in my life.  From my attendance at that first orientation and the myriad of classes I have since attended, each of those sessions contributed to build a strong foundation for my new business.

I was fortunate.  My business started off strong and began to grow quickly.  I decided to enroll in the NxLeveL Business Plan class.  To be honest, my intention was not to write a business plan, but rather to see, from my perspective, if I was doing everything right.  You see, I had a very narrow view of where I wanted to go.  I was not open to other ideas.  All I wanted to do was dot my I's and cross my T's.  Well, I soon discovered that I had a lot to learn.  Although I stayed the course, I was overwhelmed by what I was learning.  I was unaware of the valuable resources available to me that could help me chart a successful path to develop and grow my business.  I was enthralled by the stories shared by our guest speakers - all of whom had been in my shoes in an earlier point in their businesses.  We had a lot of homework.  In fact I had been "warned" by others who had taken the course to be prepared for all the homework.  Instead, for me, I poured my heart and soul into my writing.  Still I was narrowly focusing my efforts - I was playing it safe.  Our instructor, DeShawn, would write me notes in the margins of my writings; it was as though she was teasing me to think beyond my narrow dream.  She was determined to make me see beyond my short-sighted vision.

At graduation, after the ceremonies ended, I sat in a chair and DeShawn sat next to me.  We talked in general terms about what being in business for one's self really meant.  And as we were speaking, a thought occurred to me; I had not thought of it before.  I told DeShawn what had just popped into my head.  I had just had an idea for starting a complimentary business to my bookkeeping practice.  I have no idea where it came from.  She looked at me like a teacher looks at a student who finally got it.  I am now developing my second business.  This would have never happened if I had not been encouraged to think beyond my dream.  In a way, I was my own brick wall

Now...I am just getting started.  NxLeveL opened a door of discovery for me.  If anyone wishes to succeed in her business, then NxLeveL is a must.  We can leave nothing to chance... our success is our own responsibility.  NxLevel might end up leading you in an entirely different direction.  Wherever you are heading, NxLevel will help take you there and help you make it happen.  Open your minds to the possibilities."
