Program Description 

Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) and the Community Business Partnership (CBP) have partnered together to offer a unique opportunity for anyone wishing to start and/or grow a small business. 

Beginning in January 2008, a Career Studies Certificate Program in Entrepreneurship will be offered , the first of its kind in Northern Virginia.   This 26-credit program is designed to prepare students to start and to grow successful small businesses by providing instruction in entrepreneurial culture, strategy, operations, financial management, marketing and leadership. 

All courses will be taught using an accelerated eight-to-ten week semester format so the dedicated student can complete the program in one year.  Most classes will use a hybrid of in-class and on-line instruction methods and will be taught by seasoned entrepreneurs who have been through it all.  Experiential learning will be emphasized.

Courses will be offered evenings and weekends at CBP’s offices in Springfield which is located five minutes from the Springfield/Franconia Metro stop.  There is ample free parking.

 Schedule of Classes:

BUS 116    Introduction to Entrepreneurship    3 credits
Presents the various steps considered necessary when going into business.  Includes areas such as product-service analysis, market research evaluation, setting up books, ways to finance startup, operations of the business, development of business plans, buyouts versus starting from scratch, and franchising.  Uses problems and cases to demonstrate implementation of these techniques.
July 12 – August 16

BUS 165    Small Business Management    3 credits
 Identifies management concerns unique to small business.  Introduces the requirements necessary to initiate a small business, and identifies the elements comprising a business plan.  Presents information establishing financial and administrative controls, developing a marketing strategy, managing business operations, and the legal and government relationships specific to small businesses.
Lecture 3 hours per week.

MKT 160   Marketing for Small Business    3 credits
October 4 – November 8

Fin 260 Financial Management for Small Business    3 credits
Provides the tools to financial planning for the small business owner.  Includes areas such as financial statements, ratio analysis, forecasting profit, cash flow, pricing, and obtaining capital.

BUS 200    Principles of Management    3 credits
Teaches management and the management functions of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling.  Focuses on application of management principles to realistic situations managers encounter as they attempt to achieve organizational objectives.
Feb 21 – March 28

BUS 241 Business Law    3 credits

Develops a basic understanding of the U.S. legal environment.  Introduces property and contract law, agency and partnership liability, and government regulatory law.  Students will be able to apply these legal principles to landlord/tenant disputes, consumer rights issues, employment relationships and other business transactions.
April 4 – May 9

ACC 220    Accounting for Small Business (using QuickBooks)    3 credits

Presents practical accounting procedures for small business operations including service occupations, retail stores, and manufacturing operations. Covers the accounting cycle, journals, ledgers, preparation of financial statements and payrolls, and checking account management. Includes regulations applicable to payroll, self-employment, social security and other taxes.
May 16 – June 27
Instructor: 

BUS 260    Planning for Small Business (using FastTrac GrowthVenture)      3 credits

Provides knowledge of the development of a business plan, which can be used to acquire capital and serve as a management guide.  Combines knowledge that has been acquired in the areas of planning, management, and finance using pro forma statements and marketing.  Covers internet searching techniques. Recommended as a capstone course.

Credit hours can be applied to NVCC’s Business Administration or Business Management AA Degrees as electives.


How to Apply for Financial

Special Note: The financial aid process usually takes about 4 weeks. It is important to fill out your application as soon as possible. Please see disclaimer at the bottom of this page.

Step 1;      Go to www.pin.ed.gov to apply for a pin, it is needed to fill out the FAFSA form
Step 2:      Then to go www.fafsa.ed.gov and fill out the 2007-2008 financial aid form
*Note:    NOVA’s school code is 003727

Step 3:       For students attending Summer session 2008
Go to www.nvcc.edu/finance web page to locate the form needed to apply for financial aid for the summer from NOVA Instructions: Look Near the bottom of the page To find form # 27 called 2007-2008 Student Financial Aid Summer 2008 Form - print and fill this form out then return it to financial aid.

Step 4:     You will need to fill out the 2008-2009 FAFSA forms again to apply for financial aide for your Fall Courses

**Please note that the first FAFSA application is for 2007-2008 and the second FAFSA application is for 2008-2009. 
-These forms must be resubmitted each year.

3 CREDITS @ $87.10 / CREDIT HOUR = $261.30

TOTAL COST OF THE ENTREPRENURSHIP CERTIFICATE IS $2264.60
THE ENTREPRENRURSHIP CERTIFICATE IS A 26 CREDITS HOUR PROGRAM  -  26 CREDITS @ $87.10 / CREDIT HOUR = $2264.60

APPLYING FOR FINANCIAL AID DOES NOT GUATENTEE PAYMENT OF TUTION.  IF YOUR FAFSA APPLICATION IS DENIED YOU WILL BE PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR FULL PAYMENT OF YOUR TUITION.
