Lifetime Learning Tax Credit
Taxpayers may be eligible to claim a non-refundable Lifetime Learning Tax Credit to help them pay for post-secondary education for themselves and/or their dependent children. Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) and the Community Business Partnership (CBP) have partnered together to offer a unique opportunity for anyone wishing to start and/or grow a small business.
In July of 2008, a Career Studies Certificate Program in Entrepreneurship was successfully launched , the first of its kind in Northern Virginia. This 26-credit program is designed to prepare students to start and to grow successful small businesses by providing instruction in entrepreneurial culture, strategy, operations, financial management, marketing and leadership.
All courses will be taught using an accelerated four-to-six week semester format so the dedicated student can complete the program in less than thirteen months. Most classes will use a hybrid of in-class and on-line instruction methods and will be taught by seasoned entrepreneurs who have been through it all. Experiential learning will be emphasized.
Courses will be offered Saturday mornings at CBP’s offices in Springfield which is located five minutes from the Springfield/Franconia Metro stop. There is ample free parking.

BUS 165 Small Business Management 3 credits
Identifies management concerns unique to small business. Introduces the requirements necessary to initiate a small business, and identifies the elements comprising a business plan. Presents information establishing financial and administrative controls, developing a marketing strategy, managing business operations, and the legal and government relationships specific to small businesses.

BUS 241 Business Law 3 credits
Develops a basic understanding of the U.S. legal environment. Introduces property and contract law, agency and partnership liability, and government regulatory law. Students will be able to apply these legal principles to landlord/tenant disputes, consumer rights issues, employment relationships and other business transactions.

Provides knowledge of the development of a business plan, which can be used to acquire capital and serve as a management guide. Combines knowledge that has been acquired in the areas of planning, management, and finance using pro forma statements and marketing. Covers internet searching techniques. Recommended as a capstone course.

BUS 116 Introduction to Entrepreneurship 3 credits Presents the various steps considered necessary when going into business. Includes areas such as product-service analysis, market research evaluation, setting up books, ways to finance startup, operations of the business, development of business plans, buyouts versus starting from scratch, and franchising. Uses problems and cases to demonstrate implementation of these techniques.
